Hosta La Vista, Baby ...

In Spring, here in the UK, we tend to worship the new born colour. Our gardens have been so dreary for so long, with a palette of browns and greys, that this explosion of colour makes us as giddy as Banksy in a paint factory.

However, underneath the pastel pink of the blossom, the yellow of the daffodils and the  blue of the Grape Hyacinth, there lies an equally interesting colour - green ! In Spring it is fresh and unsullied, ranging in hue from fresh lime to deep dark forest green. Always restful, beautiful and tranquil.

I was walking down the garden, meeting and greeting, as you do, and I started looking at all the Hostas. We have around 50 altogether, and their newly unfolding leaves are works of art.

  1. They look beautiful, I never really looked into Hostas. My father has a big purple one in his garden with smaller leaves. These have great foliage though, what variety are they?

  2. They are lovely foliage plants, and the flowers are pretty good too. I am ashamed to say I haven't a clue about varieties. The grey blue one is Sieboldiana, I think, but don't know other than that. I have split them so many times and moved them around the garden, so any original labels are long since gone !

  3. Love all the greens and patterns on hostas. I have lots in my north facing garden.

    1. Hi Linda, thanks for the heads-up about the comments - I must have changed the settings back successfully if you are able to post comments again. Do you have problems with slugs and snails ?

  4. They look really beautiful! But the snails love them too in our garden.
We can't get rid of that brown naked beasts.
They come from the Mediterranean region and our birds don't eat them. :-((
